Interactive Floor Plans and Office Maps in SharePoint
Updated 30 September 2026 · By APPS 365 LTD
To make an interactive floor plan in SharePoint Online, add the
Image Maps for SharePoint web part to a page, upload the floor plan image, draw a hotspot over each room or area, and link each hotspot to a page, document, popup or booking link. Add extra floors for multi-storey buildings and publish the map on SharePoint or as a Microsoft Teams tab. No code is needed.
Why put your floor plans on the intranet?
New starters, hybrid workers, visitors and contractors all ask the same questions: where is the meeting room, which floor is finance on, where are the first aiders and fire wardens, where do I park? A static PDF floor plan answers none of them well. An interactive floor plan on your SharePoint intranet lets people click the place they are looking for and get the answer, whether they are at a desk or on their phone.
What you can do with an interactive floor plan
Clickable rooms and areas
Draw polygon hotspots that follow the exact shape of each room, zone or desk area, and link them to pages, documents or popups.
Multiple floors in one map
Stack every floor of a building in a single image map, with go-to-floor hotspots and an optional auto-sliding carousel.
Details that stay current
Pull room names, capacity or equipment from a SharePoint list, so facilities can update the list instead of the map.
Popups and side panels
Show a room's photo, contacts or instructions in a popup or side panel without leaving the page.
Zoom, touch and mobile
Large site plans stay readable with zoom, and the map is responsive and touch friendly on phones and tablets.
The right map for each audience
Use audience targeting so each office, site or team sees its own floor plan, and add it to their Teams channel as a tab.
Floor plan and map ideas
- Office floor plans: meeting rooms, kitchens, quiet zones and team areas, each linked to the right page or booking link.
- Health and safety: where to find fire exits, first aiders, fire wardens and defibrillators, linked to the relevant procedures.
- Visitor and new starter guides: reception, parking, accessible entrances and facilities.
- Campus and site maps: schools, universities, hospitals, factories and business parks with many buildings.
- Multi-site organisations: start from one of 50 built-in maps of countries, continents and the world, and link each location to its office site.
- Retail, warehouse and event layouts: zones, aisles, stands and stations linked to their documents or owners.

Frequently asked questions
Can one floor plan show several floors of a building?
Yes. Image Maps supports multiple floors in one map. Visitors switch floors from a menu or by clicking a go-to-floor hotspot, and you can turn on an auto-sliding carousel with pause and resume controls.
Can room details update automatically?
Tooltip content can be read from a SharePoint list. If facilities keep room names, capacity or equipment in a list, the map shows the latest details without anyone editing the map itself.
Is Image Maps a desk or room booking system?
No. Image Maps is a navigation web part, not a booking engine. You can link each desk area or meeting room hotspot to your existing booking tool, calendar or form, so people find the room on the plan and book it where they already do.
Can we show the office map in Microsoft Teams?
Yes. Add the same image map as a Teams tab, for example in each office or site team, as well as on SharePoint pages.
